Buildings are the silent partner in every company’s success. They help (or hinder) process and work flow, help attract/retain high-quality employees and help project a company’s brand to those employees, their customers and the world at large.

Kimberly-Clark recently underwent a transformation of one of their Neenah facilities to support their WorkSmart program by making a radical change to the standard workstation landscape. Designed to inspire the future and pay homage to the past, the combination of new architectural/interior configurations and features, enhanced employee amenities, branding elements and cutting-edge technologies have contributed to increased employee density and an overall increase in employee satisfaction.

Our chapter will get an in-depth look at the process and results of taking a building completed in 1994 to the next level while maintaining occupancy and work flow. Completed in July of 2016, the overhaul of WOF2 thoroughly addresses intensive collaboration needs and an increased number of mobile workers (approximately 20% of the population). Diverse amenities such as daylighting, interior plantings and a mobile market enhance the employee experience. Technology plays a key role in supporting the flexibility needed, keeping Kimberly-Clark’s work teams connected locally and globally with a host of new technologies such as Skype-enabled Polycom Trios, RoomWizards, AirMedia, etc.

In addition to designing the renovation with the company’s future in mind, Kimberly-Clark also wove in elements of its past through a wide variety of historical elements and images distributed through all 3 floors. And they addressed environmental concerns as well through a LEED-CI design process (certification pending) that has served to reduce the building’s footprint as well as make significant decreases in operating costs.

Take this opportunity to get a brief overview of the project scope, experiences and lessons-learned from the facility professionals that were in the trenches before touring the completely-redone WOF2 facility and seeing first-hand how good design and good business go hand-in-hand. You will be glad you did.
