Summer Seminar Series - Creating an Effective Statement of Work for Operations Maintenance Contracts

July 14, 2021
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Zoom Meeting
This topic addresses one of the main challenges all FM’s face: how to prepare a Statement of Work (SOW)! Some SOWs may be vague or lack critical details. Others have requirements that are overly prescriptive and can limit vendor innovation. Results from twenty years of procurement research will showcase how poor SOWs create a “tumbling dominoes” effect that brings risk to the owner. We will also provide and explain how to use a practical checklist for ensuring that your SOW has everything it needs. Tangible examples from facility contracts will be shared (e.g., custodial, maintenance, design/construction, waste management).

Dr. Jake Smithwick is the go-to resource for any facility professional who wants to elevate their team’s capabilities through O&M performance benchmarking and talent development. Together with his colleagues at Simplar, Jake has assisted hundreds of owners in improving performance outcomes across thousands of projects. His industry experience also includes field inspection of nearly 2,000 roofing systems, and six years in the US Air Force Reserve. He is a professor at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
